Video chatting is supposed to be an easy way to connect with friends, coworkers, and loved ones from far away. In today’s day and age however, there are so many options to choose from when it comes to video chatting, especially across platforms! It can be a hassle to decide which is best for you. Here are my top 5 apps for video chatting!
Obviously FaceTime is a classic option for anyone trying to video chat, but it’s Apple-only user base can make it difficult. “Adding people” to FaceTime calls makes it a great option for anyone who wants to FaceTime multiple people. The video quality of FaceTime is one of the highest on this list. I would recommend this to anyone– as long as they all have an Apple device of corse!
Oovoo was a personal favorite for me in high school. With the ability to have up to 10 people per call, there aren’t many other programs as promising as Oovoo. Sometimes the video quality is not the best but it is one of the better options I have found. I would rate it a 3.5/5 for video quality. Oovoo can be used across Apple or Android devices as well as across mobile phones, tablets, and web browser.
Houseparty is different than some of the other apps on this list, on Houseparty everyone in your “House” is alerted when you open the app. This means if you’re bored, your friends can hop online and video chat with you. After logging on you can pay to play with friends such as Heads Up. Use this app for talking your whole friend group when you want. I would not, however, recommend this to someone who looking to chat with one or two other friends.
JustTalk is great if you only want to video chat with one other person! My #1 choice for long distance couples would be JustTalk because it offers texting, audio or video calls.. The video quality is great and the call rings through your phone like a regular phone call! I think that is is an amazing and useful feature of this app.
Zoom is good for having multiple people on a call but not so much for one-on-one conversation. Highest number of people per call award goes to Zoom, up to 100 callers! Zoom is a fantastic option for group projects, club meetings, and conference calls. Video quality is not the best on Zoom, as can be expected if a call has 100 people in it! The only downside of Zoom is unless you are on a computer, you can only see four people at a time which can be frustrating.
