5 Things to Keep in Your BackPack

A shortcut to a successful college career is knowing what to keep in your college backpack. Here is a short list of five things every college student should have in their bag at all times.

After choosing the perfect backpack for college, which you can learn more about here. It’s super important to pack you bag well. Obviously pen and paper are required for most classes, as well as a laptop or tablet. Here is a list of all other things you should keep in your backpack.

1. Umbrella

First, an umbrella. Rain can happen at any time and there is no worse feeling than walking into a 250 person lecture soaking wet, papers wet, laptop wet, and having to sit in wet clothes and shoes for the next hour. They’re cheap and don’t take up too much space. I got mine for $7 at Walmart freshman year during a literal hurricane and it has been a lifesaver.

If there is only one thing you take from this article, please put an umbrella in your bag. You will thank me later, promise.

2. Phone Charger

My phone battery dies so fast because I listen to podcasts walking around campus. I bring an iPhone cable with me all of the time because I can plug it right into my laptop and charge my phone up while getting work done. Friends borrow this charger all of the time so I know it’s not just me with a dead phone battery! You can get a 3 pack of cords on Amazon for like $10 which is a no-brainer to me.

3. Headphones

Like I said before, podcasts and music are always playing when I walk to class (and when I study), so headphones are an absolute necessity. I leave the Apple pair that came with my last phone in my bookbag all of the time so I know I can have music if necessary. I’m so anal about having my music, I carry my AirPods and a pair of wired headphones in my bag, just in case my AirPods die.

Things that may be kept in a backpack. A notepad, pen, phone, camera, and photos.

4. College ID/Keys

For my school, food, building access, and printing was all linked to our college ID card so be sure to keep that with you all of the time! I keep mine on a long keychain with my dorm room key and college ID card. Throw this in your backpack (in the same pocket every time!) so you always know you have it.

5. Water Bottle

Sometimes I get super thirsty walking (running) to my classes so having my water bottle in my bag all of the time is a lifesaver. Personally, I always leave a plastic water bottle in my bag because stuff falls out of my side pockets all of the time. Most days I pack my reusable water bottle to carry with me, but I always know I have my plastic one (that I reuse!) on the side.

Honorable Mentions

Here are just a few more items that are less necessary but definitely good to have in a college backpack. I keep all of these in my bag at all times.

  • Gum/Mints
  • Snacks (protein bar, crackers, trail mix etc.)
  • Pepper Spray
  • iClicker (if you have a class that uses this–make this a necessity to have all of the time)
  • Feminine products
  • Tissues
  • Pencil, pen, highlighter
  • Laptop charger
  • Ibuprofen (+any other medicines you need)
  • Cough drops

Comment below any items you find necessary to carry with you in college!
